Last night Aspall was surrounded by the best local businesses at the ceremony for the East Anglian Daily Times Business Awards at Trinity Park in Ipswich.

The Awards are always a fantastic celebration of the diversity of local skills and businesses that we’re so lucky to have in Suffolk. I don’t often get the chance hear the stories of so many companies who are doing great work right on our doorstep. There was a real buzz and wonderfully positive atmosphere – it made me feel very proud to be a part of the local business community
We had been shortlisted for the  Family Business Award, where the judges looked at all areas of the business, from family values and how we treat our employees, through to performance and planning for the future. Sitting on a table with the other finalists, Dynamic Fireworks from Ipswich and Phillips Brothers based in Raydon, it was fascinating to find out more about them.

Dynamic Fireworks started as a family newsagents more than 40 years ago, but three generations of the Claydon family have grown the business to be a specialist market leader, with a prominent reputation in the display, retail and wholesale pyrotechnic industry. Phillips Brothers specialises in horse bedding and poultry litter and has been run by the family since 1894 – three generations are involved in the business today, so it’s difficult to imagine a more family-run company than that!

Having spent the evening with the other finalists, I felt that any one of us would have been worthy winners, so I was really delighted that the judges picked Aspall against such tough competition. The judges particularly liked our strong sense of heritage through everything we do, and our commitment to training, career development and innovation.

Extremely content with our achievements, I sat back to enjoy the rest of the evening, with no idea that we had an even greater honour yet to come – being announced winners of the overall Business of the Year Award!

The judges of the Business of the Year award selected Aspall for the top honour from among all the corporate award categories, singling out the company for the quality of its products, its commercial success and the all-round excellence found within the business.

A team effort

I was initially shocked that we had won, but it was a real honour to be collecting the prize on behalf of everyone at Aspall. What an achievement for the team here who have worked so hard to help the business grow and develop over recent years. It is that collective effort that has put us in a position to be able to win an award like this amongst so many other inspirational local companies. I couldn’t have been more proud of the company than I was last night. Well done everyone!
