Vinegar is such a versatile ingredient, and not just in the kitchen. We only recently came across an old and very rare technique using vinegar to dye feathers for use in beautiful hats.

Common forms of non-acid dye, which are typically used in combination with salt for dyeing cloths, can often be too harsh for delicate feathers. This technique can cause the feathers to become dried out lose their form, leaving them looking quite bedraggled.

Back in 1935, Henry Wilson was one of the few remaining craftsmen in London who knew the secret art of dyeing feathers without damaging them. Today, the technique is being kept alive by Maja, who dyes feathers for  Gabriela Ligenza Hats in London.

The key is to use acid dyes in combination with Aspall Malt Vinegar. The vinegar makes the dye hold and is much kinder to the feathers than the harsher dyes and salt, producing feathers that look good enough to adorn the hats of royals and movie stars throughout the world.
